Tattoo Services & Styles in Hillcrest, San Diego

Every piece at Broken Heart Tattoo is custom drawn. Here is what the team does, which artist to ask for, and how pricing actually works.

Black & Grey Tattoos

Our signature. Smooth shading, deep contrast and portraits that still read clearly in twenty years.

Built for portraits, realism, memorial pieces, religious imagery and large-scale work. We shade to heal - no muddy grey after six months.

American Traditional Tattoos

Bold outlines, saturated colour, and iconography that has held up for a hundred years. Done properly, not re-imagined.

Eagles, anchors, roses, daggers, swallows, panthers and classic flash. Heavy lines that stay heavy.

Delicate linework, script and small pieces - the studio's most popular choice for a first tattoo.

Clean single-needle work, botanical and floral designs, dainty script and small custom concepts. We advise on placement and size so the lines hold.

Cover-Ups & Rework

Old names, faded flash, blown-out pieces and scarring. Planned properly, so you never have to cover it twice.

We assess what is underneath, discuss laser lightening if it will help the result, and design something that actually covers it.

Lettering & Script

Freehand lettering drawn straight onto skin so it follows your body instead of fighting it.

Script, block, serif, dates, names and phrases. Freehand placement for a natural flow.

Sleeves & Large-Scale Work

Full sleeves, half sleeves, back pieces, chest panels and leg sleeves, broken into planned sessions.

We map the whole piece first so each session fits the final design, and quote the total before you start.

Freehand Tattoos

No stencil. The design is drawn directly onto your skin and adapted to your anatomy as we go.

Best for organic flow, lettering, abstract and custom pieces where you want the artist to have room to create.

Pricing

How tattoo pricing works at our Hillcrest studio

We quote transparently and up front, because nobody wants a surprise halfway through a session. There are three things that drive the cost of a tattoo:

  1. Size and detail. A two-inch fine line piece and a full-day realism session are completely different jobs.
  2. Placement. Ribs, sternum, hands, feet, neck and elbows take longer and are harder to heal than a forearm or thigh.
  3. Artist and time. Larger pieces are quoted hourly or by the session, with a deposit that comes off the final price.

There is a shop minimum that covers setup, sterile equipment and materials - that applies even to very small tattoos. The fastest way to get a firm number is a free 15-minute consultation, where you will get an exact quote and the deposit amount before anything is booked.

Services FAQ

Questions about our tattoo services

How much does a small tattoo cost in San Diego?

There is a shop minimum covering setup and materials, and pricing scales with size, detail and placement. Book a free 15-minute consultation for an exact quote.

Do you do cover-ups?

Yes - cover-ups are one of the studio’s specialities. We assess the existing tattoo, discuss whether laser lightening would improve the result, and design something that fully covers it.

Can I get a full sleeve here?

Yes. Full sleeves, half sleeves, back pieces and leg sleeves are planned and quoted as multiple sessions so the whole design works together.

Do you do colour, or only black & grey?

Both. Black & grey is the studio’s signature, but the team also does colour realism and saturated American traditional colour work.

Can I bring my own design?

Absolutely. Bring reference images, a sketch, or just a rough description. The artist will adapt it for size, placement and how it will age on your skin.
