Cover-Up Tattoos in Hillcrest, San Diego
Old names, faded flash, blown-out linework, scar tissue and pieces you simply regret. A cover-up is a design problem before it is a tattoo problem - and it is the one thing we refuse to rush.
A cover-up only works if the new design is built around what is already there. You cannot simply lay a darker tattoo over a lighter one and expect it to disappear. Old lines still show through shading. Solid black areas need somewhere to go. Faded colour will read through a thin design.
Sky has been doing cover-ups at this studio since 2010, and the approach is always the same: look at the existing piece properly, work out what is genuinely possible, and design something that uses the old tattoo as structure rather than fighting it.
That sometimes means telling you that a cover-up is not your best option yet. If the existing piece is very dark, very saturated, or larger than you remember, laser lightening first will give you dramatically more design freedom - and often a better final result than forcing a cover-up straight away.
Cover-Up Tattoos at Broken Heart Tattoo
Ex-name and ex-partner pieces
The most common cover-up we do. Names, initials, dates and matching pieces. We design something with real meaning rather than swapping one name for another.
Faded or blown-out work
Old flash, spread linework and greyed-out pieces from years ago. Faded work is usually the easiest to cover because there is less contrast to hide.
Small-to-medium pieces
Most cover-ups are solved by going meaningfully larger and darker than the original. We will show you the size that actually works before you commit.
Scar cover-ups
Tattooing over scar tissue is possible once a scar is fully healed and settled. We assess whether the skin will take ink evenly, and set realistic expectations about how it will look.
Rework and refresh
Not every piece needs covering. Sometimes adding contrast, re-lining and re-saturating an existing tattoo restores it far better than burying it.
When laser lightening first is the better answer
Laser lightening does not have to remove the tattoo completely. A few sessions to lift the darkest areas gives your artist far more room to design something you actually want, at a size you are happy with. It is often the difference between a cover-up that looks like a cover-up and one that looks like a tattoo someone chose.
We will recommend it when the existing piece is very dark or saturated, when it is larger than the area you want covered, when it contains dense black or heavy colour, or when you want a lighter or more detailed design on top. We will also tell you when it is unnecessary - plenty of faded tattoos cover beautifully on the first attempt.
Be sceptical of anyone who promises to cover anything with no discussion. Cover-ups that fail usually fail because the original was never properly assessed. A failed cover-up is much harder and more expensive to fix than the original tattoo was.
Bring the piece in for a look. Fifteen minutes is genuinely enough to tell you what is possible, what it will cost, and whether lightening would improve the outcome.
How cover-ups pricing works
- Cover-ups are quoted individually - there is no formula, because the existing tattoo dictates the design.
- Expect a cover-up to cost more than an equivalent-size fresh tattoo, since the design has to work around what is underneath.
- Cover-ups are almost always larger than the original piece. That is a feature of how covering works, not an upsell.
- Laser lightening, if recommended, is arranged separately and priced per session.
Cover-Ups questions
Can any tattoo be covered up?
Almost any tattoo can be improved, but not all can be fully hidden. Very dark, very saturated or very large pieces often need laser lightening first to give enough room for a good design. We will assess yours honestly and tell you which category it falls into.
Does a cover-up have to be bigger and darker than the original?
Usually, yes. Covering means blocking what is underneath, which requires more coverage and more contrast. Some faded tattoos can be covered with a similar-size design, but darker and larger is the norm.
How much does a cover-up tattoo cost in San Diego?
More than a fresh tattoo of the same size, because the design has to work around the existing piece. Pricing depends on how dark and how large the original is. Book a free consultation for an exact quote.
Can you tattoo over scars?
Yes, once a scar is fully healed and settled - which typically means at least a year, and sometimes longer. We assess whether the skin will take ink evenly, because scar tissue can absorb ink unpredictably. We will set realistic expectations before you commit.
Should I get laser removal instead of a cover-up?
That depends on the piece and on what you want on the other side. If you want a lighter, more detailed or smaller design in that spot, lightening first will give a much better result. If you want something larger and darker anyway, a direct cover-up is often fine.
How long does a cover-up take?
Most single-session cover-ups take one to three hours. Large or complex cover-ups are split across multiple sessions so the design stays coherent and the skin has time to recover between visits.
