Lettering & Script Tattoos in Hillcrest, San Diego
Names, dates, phrases and custom script - drawn freehand directly onto skin so the lettering follows your body instead of fighting it.
Lettering looks simple and is not. Text has to be legible, evenly spaced, correctly spelled, and shaped to the contours of the body it sits on. A stencil that looks perfect on flat paper can distort badly once it wraps around a forearm or a collarbone.
That is why Soda Pop draws lettering freehand. Working directly onto the skin lets the lettering flow with your anatomy - following the natural curve of the placement rather than being forced onto it - and produces something that reads correctly from every angle.
We do script, block, serif, dates, names, short phrases and handwriting transfers. Freehand lettering is one of the studio’s most requested services and one of the things it is best known for.

The two things that ruin lettering tattoos
The first is size. Text squeezed into too small an area closes up as the tattoo heals and the ink settles. Letters merge, gaps disappear, and a phrase that was readable on day one becomes a grey line a few years later. We will tell you the minimum size your text needs to stay legible, and we will not simply shrink it because the space is small.
The second is placement on a curved or moving surface. Lettering across a joint, around a wrist, or over a muscle that changes shape will distort if it is applied flat. Freehand work avoids this because the lettering is shaped to the body as it is drawn, rather than being transferred from a flat stencil.
We also confirm every word, spelling and date with you before we begin. Tattoo lettering is permanent and corrections are not simple, so we take the time to get it right at the start.
Bring the exact text, any reference styles you like, and an idea of placement. Fifteen minutes is enough for a firm price and an honest view on what size your lettering needs.
How lettering pricing works
- Lettering is usually quoted as a flat price rather than hourly, based on the length of the text and the complexity of the script.
- There is a shop minimum covering setup and materials for short pieces.
- Extended text and complex custom scripts are quoted individually.
- Exact pricing is confirmed at your free consultation.
Lettering questions
How much does a lettering tattoo cost?
Short lettering pieces start at the shop minimum, which covers setup and materials. Longer text and complex custom scripts are quoted individually based on length and detail. Book a free consultation for an exact figure.
How small can lettering be?
There is a genuine minimum, and it depends on the font and the placement. Below a certain size the letters merge as the tattoo heals. We will tell you the smallest size your text can be while remaining legible in a few years, and we will not go smaller just to fit a space.
What is freehand lettering?
The lettering is drawn directly onto your skin in ink rather than applied as a stencil from a flat design. It lets the text follow the natural contours of your body, which keeps spacing even and letterforms consistent on curved or moving areas.
Can you tattoo text in someone’s handwriting?
Yes. Bring a clear photograph or scan of the handwriting and we will reproduce it faithfully. The clearer the original, the better the result - bring the actual document if you have it.
What fonts work best for tattoo lettering?
It depends on the length of the text and where it is going. Script suits flowing placements and short phrases; block and serif hold up better for longer text and stronger graphic looks. Bring reference images and we will advise on what will hold.
